Background
MICA and MICB proteins are stress - inducible molecules. They are expressed on the surface of cells under various stress conditions, such as infection, inflammation, or cellular transformation. Their main function is to serve as ligands for the NKG2D receptor, which is expressed on natural killer (NK) cells, cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), and some other immune cells. When MICA or MICB binds to NKG2D, it triggers an activating signal in the immune cells, leading to the activation of their cytotoxic functions. This helps the immune system to identify and eliminate stressed, infected, or transformed cells.
