- Background CD117 is a cell membrane protein encoded by the c-kit proto-oncogene (chromosome 4q11-12). The protein is a type III tyrosine kinase growth factor receptor for stem cell factor (SCF), also known as mast cell growth factor. CD117 is required for the development and growth of a large number of cells expressing this protein.
