  • Background 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin) is an indoleamine neurotransmitter and intestinal hormone—~90% synthesized by intestinal enterochromaffin cells, 10% in the CNS—that modulates key CNS functions (mood, sleep, appetite, cognition, pain) and peripheral processes (intestinal peristalsis, vasoconstriction, platelet aggregation); abnormal levels associate with depression, anxiety, migraine, and irritable bowel syndrome, with SSRIs clinically treating depression via inhibiting 5-HT reuptake.
